Why Injecting Fine Dust into a Tornado Is More Promising Than Injecting Coarse Dust: A Geometric Explanation

چکیده
One of the promising ways to tame a tornado is to inject dust into it. Somewhat counter-intuitively, injecting coarse dust only makes the tornado stronger, while injecting fine dust can indeed help in the taming. This difference has been explained by a mathematical analysis of the corresponding equations, but (in contrast to the usual physics practice) this mathematical analysis has not yet been accompanied by a simple qualitative physical explanation. We show that such a simple explanation can be obtained if we analyze the problem of taming tornados from the geometric viewpoint. 1 Formulation of the Problem How to tame a tornado: an idea. Blades in an empty blender rotate very fast. However, when we place some material into the blender, the blades slow down. The more material we place in a blender, the more the blades slow down. This known phenomenon leads to a natural idea that maybe we can slow down rotations in a tornado if we inject substance into it. In general, this idea does not work well. An injection of heavy coarse material into a simulated flow has been tried; unfortunately, it turns out that

Direct In-situ Measurement of Natural Dust Devil Sediment Loading and Flux
Introduction: Dust devils are an effective aeolian erosion mechanism of small-scale, substantially particle loaded convective vortices driven by insolation, common on both Earth and Mars. These vortices are highly turbulent flows with dust entrainment that is dictated by the surficial material over which they pass, the ambient wind that push them, and the pockets of hot air that power their " e...

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Desert dust is formed under the influence of special weather and environmental conditions in desert areas and enters the atmosphere. Local hurricanes caused by surface air instability, passing through dry deserts, remove silt and sand particles from the surface and enter the atmosphere. Desert dust physically, in addition to its ecological effects such as lun...

OBJECTIVES The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and Japan Society for Occupational Health (JSOH) classified wood dust as a human carcinogen. Former studies have suggested that sanding with a portable sander is one of the processes that are liable to cause highest exposure to wood dust. However, the wood dust by sanding operation has not been investigated sufficiently. In this ...
متن کاملSaltation impact as a means for raising dust on Mars
Experiments were conducted under atmospheric pressures appropriate for Earth and Mars to determine the e,ciency of sand in saltation as a means for raising dust into the atmosphere under wind speeds which would otherwise be too low for dust entrainment. Experiments involving intimate mixtures of sand and dust (1:1 ratio by mass) showed that after an initial .urry of activity of a few seconds du...

Aerosol optical depth measurements over Bahrain acquired through the ground-based Aerosol Robotic Network are analyzed. Optical depths obtained from ground-based sun/sky radiometers showed a pronounced temporal trend, with a maximum dust aerosol loading observed during the March to July period. The aerosol optical depth probability distribution is rather narrow with a modal value of about 0.25....
